SUMMER YOUTH PROGRAMS

SAILING

From the end of June through mid August, we offer free sailing programs to children ages 10-17. Our programs teach everything about sailing, from the very basics to advanced navigation and racing. New sailors start in a beginner class and then may move up to an intermediate.

BEGINNER

A beginner is someone who has never taken sailing classes before, or may have sailed somewhere else and has not participated in PPSC’s programs. During a beginner session, a student will learn tacking, jibing, boat parts, sailing in a straight line, knots, basic sail theory, and more!
BEG 1 is a one week, all day session which starts at 9am and ends at 4pm with an hour for lunch. Students will need to bring their own lunch.

Beginner classes are two week, half day sessions which start at 9am and end at noon.

On Fridays, we take all day sailing trips out to the Harbor Islands. Harbor Island Trips alternate every other Friday for beginners, so that they occur at the end of their sessions (the first Friday, beginners do not have lessons). Students need to arrive at the sailing center at 8:30am and must bring a lunch with them. If the weather is agreeable and the island we are sailing to has a beach, students can bring a bathing suit and towel as well. We come back to the sailing center between 4:00 & 4:15pm.

INTERMEDIATE
An intermediate sailor is someone who has been in our program before, feels comfortable in a sail boat, and has basic sailing skills. Intermediate students build on learned skills before and improve on skills such as man overboards, docking, basic navigation, racing, and more!

Intermediate classes are two week, half day sessions which start at 1pm and end at 4pm.

The Art and Science of Sailing is a one week, all day program during which an emphasis will be placed on combining science and sailing. The session starts at 9 am and ends at 4pm with an hour for lunch. Students will need to bring their own lunch. During this session, students will learn about sailing theory, boatbuilding, weather, and how navigational concepts.

On Fridays, we take all day sailing trips out to the Harbor Islands. These expeditions occur on the first Friday of their session (classes are not held the second Friday). Students need to arrive at the sailing center at 8:30am and must bring a lunch with them. If the weather is agreeable and the island we are sailing to has a beach, students can bring a bathing suit and towel as well. We come back to the sailing center between 4:00 & 4:15pm.
